Conversations Performance

Oboe Duet

“Conversations” is my interpretation of various types of conversations I have. The piece is as if I were walking into a typical day, past people I knew and having brief interactions with each different person. Unlike the modern composer’s tendency to write literal transcriptions of life events, I chose to convey the emotions that spring up, the thoughts that whir underneath every sentence. Each thought might surface in the conversation, but they are most likely to tint the conversation with a certain emotion, feeling, and groove.

Completed in October, 2016, the piece was written for two friends who premiered it, Shoshana Klein and Brooke King, that same month. I left notes in the score at the beginning of each section. Each note was a quote from a pop song that I felt suited the feeling I was conveying. Shoshana and Brooke know that from their time spent with me, I sometimes break out into song and I hoped they’d appreciate the personal touch!

“It can’t come quickly enough
And now you’ve spent your life
Waiting for this moment
And when you finally saw it coming
It passed you by and left you so defeated.”
— Scissor Sisters

“The beat goes on and on and on and on and…”
— Charlie XCX

“When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb.”
— Pink Floyd

“I – I know
How I feel when I’m around you
I don’t know
How I feel when I’m around you.”
— System of a Down

“You got designer shades
Just to hide your face and
You wear them around like
You’re cooler than me.”
— Mike Posner

“So hey, let’s be friends
I’m dying to see how this one ends.”
— Taylor Swift

“Now you’re just somebody that I used to know.”
— Gotye

“… but now somehow
My words roll of my tongue onto your lips.”
— Nick Jonas
